“Bye, Jaxson.”

He gave her a distracted wave back as he got caught up with talking to the parents in his next tour.

Cat clutched her shopping bags and turned away, stepping inside the inn. Scarlett was in her usual spot behind the reception desk.

“Hello, Catharine. Did you have a good time?”

“We did.” Cat went up to her, resting her things on the counter. She pawed through the bags until she found what she was looking for. “Jaxson took me to the tinker shop. I bought this figure. Isn’t it cute?”

Scarlett took the little stall man, smiling softly. “It is. Waylon is very talented.” She looked up. “How is he doing?”

“He looked like he was well. They have a good relationship. Jaxson said he practically grew up in that shop. Waylon taught him everything he knows.”

“Yes.” Scarlett handed the carving back. “I only had him for the summers, but I wanted Jaxson to have positive male influences in his life.” A small frown appeared on her face. “Not like his father.”

“Jaxson barely talks about his father. What’s he like?”

Scarlett kissed her teeth. “Tut, tut, tut. Don’t get me started on my brother.”

“Okay, I—”

“The man is insufferable,” Scarlett cried, getting started. “Deep down he’s a good man, and he took care of Jaxson the best he could, but he’s one of those guys that never really grew up or learned that it was time to take his life and responsibilities seriously.”

“But Jaxson turned out okay despite that,” Cat offered.

Scarlett sighed. “My Jaxson is a good boy, but I worry about him. I want him to stay here and—” Scarlett stopped, blinking. “I’m sorry. I’m here talking your ear off when you had a long day. You must want to go upstairs and rest.”

“Oh, no, it’s okay. I’m happy to talk.”

She waved a hand at her. “No, you go on up. I’ll bring you something cool to drink in a moment. How does that sound?”

Cat thanked her and gathered her things. She did want to lie down for a bit as it happened. She spent all morning running around town in the hot sun. A soft bed and a cool glass of iced tea was just what she needed.

Cat climbed the stairs and let herself into her room. She tossed her things on the bed and then threw herself after them. Getting comfy, she fished her phone out of her bag and dialed Lana.

She answered on the third ring.

“Hey, Cat. How’s it going? Have you booked your flight yet?”

“About that,” Cat began, sitting up and leaning against her headboard. “I’m not leaving.”

“What? Ever?!”

“No, that’s not what I mean,” Cat corrected. “I meant I’m not leaving early. I’m staying here the full two weeks, and I want you to release a statement saying why. I won’t have the media spouting ridiculous suicide stories and getting my parents involved. But I’m also not going to let them drive me out of here.

“I’ve let the things people say about me run my life for too long, and it ends now.
